Part of the Research Semester Programme "Democratizing real-world problem tailored optimization". This Wrap-up Meeting is scheduled on 21 & 22 May '26.

We wrap up a semester full of networking and collaboration on formulating a systematic tailoring process for solving real-world optimization problems.

Optimization problems are everywhere — from designing the optimal material composition for solar cells, to determining the right radiation dose in cancer treatment, to planning the most efficient train schedules.

However, while general optimization algorithms can usually provide working solutions, in practice the approach is usually refined for the specific problem at hand. This adaptation is a tedious and costly process, which begs the question: Can we systematize algorithm tailoring? Or even make some parts automatic?

During the Wrap-up meeting, we will synthesize the insights collected throughout the semester on tailoring optimization algorithms to real-world problems. The goal is to consolidate these insights into a structured and accessible resource that captures practical guidelines, common pitfalls, and recurring patterns in algorithm tailoring. In addition, the meeting will address a key challenge identified during the programme: the social and structural barriers between academic researchers and practitioners in industry.
